Happy Hens 101: Backyard Chicken Basics
with Kalyn Hughes
This outreach class is designed for anyone interested in raising healthy, happy chickens in an urban or suburban setting. Participants will learn the essentials of proper chicken care, including providing food, water, and shelter, as well as special considerations for chicks and tips to help your flock thrive through the winter months.
We’ll explore the lifespan of chickens, covering when hens begin laying eggs, how long they remain productive, and what to expect as they age. The class will also touch on chicken behavior, such as understanding the pecking order and best practices for introducing new birds to an existing flock.
Another key topic will be egg handling—whether to wash fresh eggs, when it’s necessary, and how to properly clean and store them. If time allows, we’ll finish with an overview of common chicken breeds suited for backyard flocks.
Note: This class will not include information about roosters, as they are not permitted within city limits.
